Gorgeous Day for an Art Walk

Did you remember it's the Upper Queen Anne Art Walk today? It starts at 6pm and some businesses are open until 8pm while others are open until 9pm. What a gorgeous day to meander and walk the Queen Anne strip and look at art!

I popped in at the QA Farmer's Market to pick up some fresh berries and flowers for our artist reception and it was amazing to see all the families out and about. I hope on your way to or from the market, you'll be stopping by the businesses to say hello to the artists.

Oh yeah...something new at the McGraw end of the street. Eat Local and Bouncing Wall is working together to bring LOCAL Bounce. What is that you say? Well...it's our way of giving some space to the indie crafters and local artist vendors to have some place to strut their stuff. Come check it out. It's fun!

Best Neighborhood...Oh Yeah Queen Anne!

Let's give a little "whoop whoop" to Queen Anne being listed as the Best Neighborhood in the July issue of Seattle Magazine's BEST NEIGHBORHOODS.

Several of the Upper Queen Anne businesses were mentioned as to why Queen Anne is "vibrant" and "cool". How awesome is that! Our neighborhood shop Urban Kids Play and Bouncing Wall were the new stores mentioned as new comers, while they gave props to the "longtime favorites" like Queen Anne Books and Hilltop Yarn. In addition, the following places were mentioned as the places to eat and drink...El Diablo, Betty and How To Cook A Wolf

Upper Queen Anne Summer Art Walk

It's time for the 2nd annual Upper Queen Anne Summer Art Walk! Last year's had a fabulous start for a first year art walk in Queen Anne, which was spearheaded by Kim of Bouncing Wall (that's me!) and Joan from Queen Anne Frame and Avenue Arts.

This is year will be bigger and better with help from Jaime Bagnariol, our new UQAMA President. UQAMA is launching the Summer Art Walk to coinside with the QA Farmer's Market from June to October. In addition, there will be a pre-launch Kick-off event with the local schools around Queen Anne on May 15th. What does this mean? 20 local merchants are "adopting" a class from John Hay, McClure, Country Day, St. Anne's and Coe and coordinating with the art teachers to display art in the locations.

This is a great outreach program that we hope will be welcomed by the community. The merchants are now getting the art work up in their locations so go out and check out the local student work. If you prefer to be part of the "event night"...come out on Thursday, May 19th starting at 6pm! Hope to see you all there!

The Hilltop Yarn Shop is having a fabulous sale this weekend and people are lining up outside the doors to take advantage of it! I wish we had the camera to take a picture of the eager customers waiting to get in.

The UQAMA were alarmed to hear that Hilltop Yarn experienced a small electrical fire and had to close shop for a bit of time. We are glad to see them open their doors again and wish them the best!!

Holiday Magic Street Scramble

November 2007

The annual Holiday Magic street festival on Upper Queen Anne will be Friday, December 7th from 3:00pm to 7:00pm from Galer to McGraw streets.

New this year for the month of November will be the Holiday Magic Street Scramble. A Street Scramble is similar to a scavenger hunt, but instead of hunting for things, you will be asked to answer questions about each of the businesses participating in Holiday Magic.

How It Works:

Pick up your question and answer form at any participating Holiday Magic business.
Fill out the form by answering all of the questions correctly. You have the whole month of November to do this.
Turn in your form to Blue Highway Games at 2203 Queen Anne Ave. N. by 3:00pm the night of Holiday Magic.
At 6:00pm, right before the Christmas tree lighting at Bethany Presbyterian, 10 winners will be randomly drawn.
Those with the correct answers will win gift certificates from select local businesses.*

So go check out all of the great businesses Upper Queen Anne has to offer, play the Street Scramble game, and win great prizes!

*Must be present to win.

Did you notice a new space on Queen Anne recently with an open atmosphere and games galore? Blue Highway Games may have opened quietly on July 3rd but the buzz was large for their grand open on July 21st.

Urban Kid's Play

Since it's grand opening earlier this summer, Urban Kid's Play is getting a lot of "play" in the press. They recently received a full page write up on the Seattle Metropolitan Magazine in the "Corner Shop" section for the July issue and was recently listed as one of top Kids, Maternity and Baby Stores under the Toy Store section in the Seattle Magazine for the August Issue.

Once Upon a time

The south end of upper Queen Anne is fast become the "children's" corner. Once Upon a Time is a new children's store owned by Janelle McCrackin. This little upstairs treasure spot has also been listed as one of the top Toy Stores in the Seattle Magazine's August Issue of 133 Best Shops!

Bouncing Wall: "Where Art Meets Fashion"

As Bouncing Wall is nearing it's 1 year anniversary (September 15), the shop is becoming the senior of the "new" freshmen class of stores. BW also received the "Best of.." in the Seattle Magazine's Best Gift Boutique section.

It's finally here! The long awaited farmers market will be here on Upper Queen Anne starting tomorrow, Thursday June 28th! The Farmers Market will start at 3pm and will go until 7pm every Thursday until October. The timing couldn't be more perfect with the Neighborhood Nights going on until at least till 8pm...you have plenty of time to go to the market, do a little shopping and grab a bite to eat before you head home.

The Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association (UQAMA) want to say a big "THANK YOU" to all who attended and joined us on our first Upper Queen Anne Art Walk last night. Many of you came out to follow the "yellow balloons" to check out the art in various locations and enjoyed the nibbles and drinks.

We appreicate our neighbors who are enthusiatic in supporting the neighbhorhood business and a special thanks goes out to those of you traveled from places like Bellevue and Edmonds to come and join us for our first art walk.

Save the Date! Neighborhood Nights and Queen Anne Art Walk To Begin In June!

The Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association begins hosting Neighborhood Nights this month; every Thursday businesses will be open late until 8:00pm, with a new Queen Anne Art Walk the third Thursday of every month starting June 21^st.

“My hope for Neighborhood Nights is to offer busy people a way to make it easy to shop and dine in their neighborhood. Our great local restaurants, cafes and other businesses are already open late. By having Neighborhood Nights the same night as the new Queen Anne Farmer’s Market, we hope to offer several reasons to enjoy shopping and dining in Queen Anne during the warmer weather,” says Joan Webster of Queen Anne Frame who is also the current president of the Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association.

In addition, Webster says businesses would benefit by pooling our resources to create increased foot traffic and exposure to new customers, brought to Queen Anne Avenue by all of our restaurants, unique shops and the new Queen Anne Art Walk. Thereby strengthening the business community and the identity of the business district.

The Queen Anne Art Walk will be on the third Thursday of every month to coincide with Neighborhood Nights and the Farmer’s Market. Kim Flanery-Rye of Bouncing Wall has been heading up this project.

Flanery-Rye, whose passion and background is in art, says that when she first moved into Queen Anne with her business, she thought it was interesting that a well-established neighborhood like Queen Anne would not have an art walk.

Her hope for the art walk is to create an environment of art appreciation, “For the neighborhood attendees, I hope it will give them an opportunity to meet many of the artists and be exposed to additional art they would not be exposed to otherwise. For the artists, I hope it will give them another venue to showcase their work. For the local businesses and participating merchants, I hope it will provide further exposure of their businesses.”

Neighborhood Nights - Open Late 'til 8

Upper Queen Anne is excited to launch "Neighborhood Nights" during the summer months. What does this mean? Many of the businesses in Upper Queen Anne will be staying open late every Thursday night until at least until 8pm or later for you to enjoy the extended hours for strolling, dining and shopping starting June.

In addition, every 3rd Thursday of the month, close to 20 different businesses will be participating in an Upper Queen Anne Art Walk. Stay tuned for more details in a future posting!
